Steps To Answered Prayer
By Tamara L. Dean
The steps you are about to read were taken from the late Kennenth E. Hagin's book, Steps to Answered Prayer. I used the steps he gave as a basic outline, and expounded from there. So, take a moment, focus and get present in this moment as you prepare your heart in getting your prayers past the ceiling, and into the throne room of God.
STEP 1/7: Decide what you want from God?
You pull up to a drive-thru; a voice comes across the intercom and says, "Can I take your order?" You know what you want, so you reply-- "May I get a chicken sandwich no mayo please?" After completing your order, you fully expect to receive what you asked for. Right?
So, now you are at the windows of heaven and God wants to serve you more than you can ask for. What do you want? Wait! Before you answer that question consider God's prerequisites. But let him (THAT's YOU) ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that waiver is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man (THAT's YOU again!) think that he shall receive anything of The Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways (James 1:6-8). When you ordered your chicken sandwich was there any doubt in your mind that you would not get your sandwich? Likely not! That is the kind of unwavering faith that is needed when approaching God when you need direction and clarity regarding your purpose in life, healing in your body and soul, prosperity, and whatever else you desire. Be fully persuaded, clear and concise about what it is that you want.
I encourage you to get a journal or a simple notebook. Dedicate it as your prayer journal. Write on the cover, 'Prayers,' and then write down your order/request. When God fills your request then make a notation in your journal of your answered prayer. It will serve as a reminder that God, indeed, answers prayers. Don't be afraid to ask God for anything. He has a menu with unlimited items. Make sure to include a prayer request for a person who may have a similar prayer desire. Remember, we must sow to reap.
Step 2 /7 Find and Read Scriptures That Promise the Answer You Need.
1John 5:14-15 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask ANY THING according to his WILL, he HEARS us: And if we KNOW that he hear us, WHATSOEVER we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we DESIRED of him.
It is IMPOSSIBLE for God to lie! If He said it, that settles it, but is it settled with you? Do you cancel your faith in God because of outward circumstances? Not when you are fully persuaded. The next step to getting your prayers answered is finding a scripture that proves that you have a right to receive what it is that you desire. It’s your petition, your proof that you can wave in the devils face when he tries to bring doubt. Isaiah 43:26 Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou may be justified. God knows everything He has written in His word, so state your case. That is why, not only is a prayer life good for you, but bible study as well. The bible is your menu. It lets you know what you can request. In staying with our drive-thru example, let’s say you pulled up to the drive-thru with a coupon that read, ‘buy one sandwich of your choice and get a second one FREE.’ You feel confident asking for a second sandwich for free because you have a coupon that entitles you to one. Whatever God promises you is your redeemable coupon.
Next to your prayer request write the scripture that promises you what you are asking for. If you are not Bible savvy and need help trying to find a scripture for your need I've listed a few to help get you started. Grab a bible and practice looking them up for yourself. Also, most bibles are equipped with a concordance that allows you to find scriptures on a particular word.
~ Finances: Philippians 4:19, 3 John 2, Deuteronomy 8:18
~ Healing/Health: 1Peter 2:24, John 2, Psalms 91:15,
~ Direction in making a decision: Proverb 3:5-6
~ Brokenhearted: Psalm 147:3
~ Protection/Safety: 91:10-12
~ Children: Psalm 112:1-3
Step 3: Ask God for the Things you want
Matthew 7:7,8- Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for EVERY ONE (that includes you) that ask receive; and he that seek find; and to him that knock it shall be opened.
Step 1: You decided what you wanted, Step 2: You found scriptures that backed your claim and right to receive. Now Ask God for it. Sounds simple? It is, but it’s a step we kinda skim over haphazardly, not really understanding the impact of asking. When you pulled up to the drive-thru you had to ASK for that chicken sandwich, right? You can’t just pull up to the drive-thru and say nothing, or else you will get nothing. Although, God knows what things you have need of before you ask, you still need to ask. Why? Because there is power in your words. Your asking initiates a two-part covenant between you and God. You ask. He gives. But, remember you must ask in faith without wavering or doubting.
So, if you wanted finances your prayer would go sound something like this: God, in the name of Jesus I ASK, according to Philippians 4:19, that says You will supply my need according to your riches in glory. Right now my need is financial. I am asking that you provide me with an overflow of blessings that won’t just cover my need, but that will allow me to be a blessing to others. Deuteronomy 8:18 says that You give me power to get wealth, so I receive that power right now! In the name of Jesus I pray Amen!
Step 4/7: Believe That You Receive
Mark 11:23-24 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever YOU desire, when YOU PRAY, BELIEVE that ye receive [them], and YOU SHALL have [them].
Here is probably the most difficult steps of them all…BELIEVING. It takes great faith to believe that you have something that none of your 5 senses can grab hold of. To believe that you are healed when the doctor’s report and the pain in your body says different is not easy, but you must stay connected to the scripture (your redeemable coupon) that ties you to the promise that you are after. You must have an unrelenting trust and belief that your Creator God loves you, and that He will follow through on what He promised.
Step 5/7: REFUSE TO DOUBT-James 4:7 Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Kenneth Hagin has often been quoted saying, “You can’t stop a bird from flying over your head, but you can stop it from building a nest.” In other words, just like you would slap away a bird if it tried to land on your head; you need to slap away doubtful thoughts that are contrary to what you believe. How do you do that? Open your mouth and fight back with positive words--better yet the Word of God. Replace negative thoughts with words of declaration. "I declare that I AM healed, because Jesus died that I may have good health." Refuse to doubt! Settle it with finality that you will not lose hope in getting your prayer needs met.
Step 6/7 MEDITATE ON THE PROMISES:
Proverbs 4:20-22 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
Meditating on the promises simply means to think, ponder, pay close attention to, or rehearse the scriptures that you are standing on (Step 2). Don’t lose sight of them! Memorize them! When doubt tries to creep in, kick it out with the promise of God’s word. The devil will try and talk you out of your faith. He will try and get you to focus on what it looks like, or what it feels like, but we walk by faith not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:8). Use the faith that you have in God and His word to combat any unbelief.
“The only way God works is through His word. He moves in line with His word” Kenneth E. Hagin
Step 7/7 Give God the Praise!
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God
The final step in getting your prayers answered is to give God thanks! Normally, when you ask someone for something and they give it, what do you say?…Thank You! Continue Thanking God that He answered your prayer. Don’t fret about it, become anxious or weary if it looks contrary, just keep thanking God. When my body doesn’t feel well I thank God for my healing. As I believe for direction on what to do about a matter, I thank God that I have an unction from the holy one and I know all things (1 John 2:20). You don’t need to keep asking for something you believe you already have. All you have to do is say, “Thank you Lord, I receive it.”
I am so confident that if you follow these 7 steps your prayers are sure to be answered. As a matter of fact, we would appreciate hearing about it, so please leave a message on PrayHers Facebook page, or email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
